The Career Mentoring Program in the Faculty of Business and Economics now in its 16th year and has grown from small beginnings in 2003, into one of the largest faculty based career mentor programs in Australia. The program welcomes both local and global Mentors as meetings can be held face to face, via Skype or phone.
The program has successfully matched hundreds of business students across various disciplines with professionals from a diverse range of organisations and professional backgrounds. Our mentors share their valuable industry knowledge and experience with both undergraduate and graduate students studying in similar fields.

About the program
The Career Mentoring Program matches selected students with business professionals in a mentoring partnership. The aim of this program is to assist students (mentees) with their career development, their transition from university into the workforce and to engage business professionals in a mutually beneficial partnership. Mentors assist their mentees in identifying career goals and professional development plans.
Participating students are linked with mentors based on their shared interests and area of specialty.
This program gives you the opportunity to contribute to the community while at the same time, differentiating your career from your colleagues by further developing leadership and mentoring skills.
The Career Mentoring Program is open to both undergraduate and graduate students from the Faculty of Business and Economics.

Mentoring business areas
We welcome interest from prospective mentors from across the full spectrum of industries and would like to hear from business professionals with experience in any of the following areas:
- Actuarial Science
- Banking and Financial Services
- Human Resources and Organisational Development

The mentor's role
The role of the mentor is to partner with the mentee in the development of their professional understanding and career goals including:
- Guiding students to achieve self-reliance
- Providing insight into particular professional fields and networks
- Challenging, motivating, inspiring and encouraging
- Being patient and building trust
- Identifying assumptions and preconceptions, and offering alternative perspectives
- Encouraging self-directed reflection, analysis and problem solving
Recognising that our mentors are busy professionals, we strongly encourage mentees to take primary responsibility for organising meetings and initiating communication. The usual commitment from a mentor is five or more 1 hour face-to-face meetings a year, with regular (usually monthly) contact via phone or email.
A common question from both Mentee and Mentor alike is "Where should we meet?"
Appropriate meeting places conducive to a professional mentoring relationship include an office/workplace, cafe/restaurant, on campus at the University, library, or other public locations. Not appropriate: meetings in a private residence or home offices.
Tip: We advise against the consumption of alcohol during meetings.
The screening and matching process
Because of the popularity of the program the student selection process is competitive. Students must progress through a screening process to ensure their suitability for the program. We also ask mentors to register online to ensure we understand your background experience and skills in order for us to match you appropriately with a mentee. A minimum of three years of professional work experience is required.
When matching mentors and mentees, we look at areas of study, professional experience, and interest areas of both individuals and try to match accordingly.
Selection of students and mentors to participate in the Career Mentoring Program is at the discretion of the Faculty of Business and Economics.
The Faculty of Business and Economics has the right to, at its sole discretion, terminate or revoke the invitation to the mentor or mentee.
January 2019 to Mid March 2019 - Mentor Applications
Our application process involves matching mentors and students with similar professional and personal interests, so spending some time on your applications will assist us make the best match for you. If you would like to participate as a mentor in the 2019 program, please complete an expression of interest form.
Mid April - Program Launch (1 - 2 hours)
The program officially starts in April with when mentors and mentees are advised about their match and can commence initiating their first meeting. This occurs at The University of Melbourne, however we understand that mentors may not be able to attend the launch. The mentee will then contact their mentor to have their first meeting. Guidelines are provided to mentors and mentees.
April to October - Develop Your Mentoring Relationship
The mentoring program then runs throughout the University calendar until October, with mentors and mentees managing their meetings and communication themselves. The Faculty of Business and Economics provides guidance to mentees about how to best utilise the connection and will touch base with participants during the year. The meetings usually run for one hour.
August - Mid-Year Networking Event (1 - 2 hours)
An opportunity to meet other Mentors and Mentees participating in the Mentoring Program, exchange experiences and further develop professional networks.
October – Program Closing
Mentors and mentees are encouraged to schedule their final meeting, review what they have discussed and achieved together. Mentoring pairs may choose to maintain some form of contact following the official conclusion of the program.
