Business Practicum - Winter 2020

BUSA90473 Business Practicum is an in-company intensive subject where students experience the unique business practices and culture of a company first-hand.
The Business Practicum is worth 12.5 credit points and is offered in Summer and Winter of each year. The BP Winter intake is delivered in Melbourne and Sydney in July.

Why take BUSA90473 Business Practicum
Studies show that having a well-developed range of transferrable skills is crucial for the success of individuals, businesses and societies. Often referred to as employability or ‘soft’ skills, these are the non-technical skills such as communication, teamwork, problem solving, critical thinking and self-management which are developed through exposure to experiences outside the classroom - like work integrated learning subjects, internships and on-the-job learning.
When these employability skills are combined with technical skills/qualifications and personal attributes, an individual becomes employable across a range of industries, increasing job prospects, becoming a more competitive job-seeker and being a more attractive potential hire.
So what does this have to do with the Business Practicum?
As well as being an impressive addition to any CV, the primary aim of the Business Practicum is to provide graduate students with opportunities to develop and enhance employability skills from application right through to the final assessment and beyond.
It is expected that two thirds of all jobs will be soft skill intensive by 2030, so finding opportunities to develop these skills as early as possible is becoming increasingly important.
In the Business Practicums this is done by:
- Working closely in a team;
- Building resilience by being exposed to challenging and intensive working environments;
- Communicating with a range of stakeholders;
- Increasing networks;
- Using critical thinking and problem-solving skills to solve a real business problem;
- Applying classroom theory to real world practice.

Eligibility Critera
You are enrolled into an MBS graduate degree
Faculty of Business and Economics (FBE) students who have already completed one Graduate Practicum subject may apply to take another but will be placed on a waiting list and only offered a place based on availability.
Non-FBE students are not eligible to apply for any FBE practicum subjects without the prior approval of the Subject Coordinator and the MBS Deputy Dean. Proof of approval must be emailed to mbs-practicums@unimelb.edu.au before the application close date. Late approval submissions will not be accepted and applications without the required approval will be withdrawn.
Your Weighted Average Mark (WAM) is 70% or higher
Due to limited spaces, entry into the Global Business Practicum is competitive. Selection is based on a University of Melbourne equivalent weighted average mark for all undergraduate and postgraduate subjects successfully completed at the selection date, as well as performance in an interview process, and is contingent on permission from the Subject Coordinator.
The minimum average mark requirement for the subject is 70% and the Selection Committee considers the following when allocating places:
- Academic Performance
- Interview performance
- An overall match of skills, experience and interests to the available projects
You have completed a minimum of 50 points
- 200-point degree students: completion of a minimum of 50 points at time of application; or
- 150 point degree students: completion of a minimum of 50 points at time of practicum commencement if you have a business background (e.g. studied business subjects in an undergraduate degree or relevant work experience).
Note: All students enrolled in a 200-point degree must first have completed 50 points before applying, regardless of educational background.
You are only applying for one Practicum subject (Business or Global Business Practicum) for the intake
Students must only apply for one Graduate Practicum subject per intake. Students who apply for both the Global Business Practicum and the Business Practicum during the same intake (e.g. January/Summer) will not be considered for either subject.
You have met with a Course Planner from STOP1 and checked that there is capacity within your study plan for this elective subject worth 12.5 points
Students are required to seek guidance from a STOP1 Course Planner prior to applying to ensure there is space in their study plan for this subject. Course Advice appointments can be booked here.
Please note: students undertaking the Master of Commerce (Finance) are generally ineligible to apply, due to limited elective options available in the course.
You have prepared your CV and had it reviewed
Students who successfully make it through the selection process (including attending a group interview) and receive an official offer for the Business Practicum must submit an up-to-date CV as part of the acceptance requirements.
CVs must be reviewed by the Careers and Employability Studio at Stop 1, or by an external professional CV writing service.

How much will it cost?
Students allocated to Melbourne:
Standard University subject fee, plus any local transport costs and meals.
Students allocated to Sydney:
Standard University subject fee, plus an additional fee of $1365. Additional fee includes a 4 person share apartment with 2 x twin rooms, 2 x bathrooms, fully equipped kitchen & laundry facilities and free WIFI. This fee does not include your airfare, local transport, meals or spending money.
Funding available for Sydney
All students who have not previously received a Faculty of Business & Economics travel grant are eligible for a $750 scholarship to assist with costs. No application is required as all selected eligible Sydney applicants will be awarded this funding.

Can I apply if I don’t have any consulting experience?
Yes, there is a full selection process including a group interview to determine your eligibility and suitability for the program. Selection is not based on existing consulting experience.
What if I don’t have any work experience on my CV?
We are looking at how the CV is put together, not the work experience. We understand that many students will not have work experience.CONCURRENT STUDY
I want to take an online intensive subject over the summer/winter break while also completing the BP (e.g. Ethics in Finance). Is this okay?
No, even though the subject is online, students participating in the BP will not be permitted to enrol in any other subjects that run during the same dates as the practicums. BP is intensive and requires 100% commitment from students.CITIES, PROJECTS AND TEAMS
Can I choose the BP city?
Students can nominate their order of preferences of BP cities. Nominating only one city may reduce the likelihood of being selected into the program.
Can I change my city preference once I’ve been accepted?
No, preferences are not able to be negotiated once the offer has been accepted. We base substantial decision making and coordination of arrangements on the nominated preferences.
Can I choose the company or type of project?
No, students are allocated to teams and companies with specific projects. However, students are given the opportunity to advise their areas of interest which we endeavour to consider when allocating teams. Students would not be allocated to a project where they did not have the technical skills required. Most projects are multi-disciplinary.SYDNEY ACCOMMODATION
I have family that live in Sydney. Can I stay with them during the BP or do I have to stay at the organised accommodation?
Students must stay at the organised accommodation due to the intensive nature of the subject and because a lot of the teamwork happens during the evening and late into the night.Can I pay an additional cost and have my own single room?
No, package costs have been worked out based on twin share rooms with accommodation secured up to six months in advance. Single rooms are not practical for the remaining students who may not wish to pay extra for a single room, nor can the availability of additional rooms be guaranteed.I have a friend of different gender, can we request to share a room?
No, whilst we understand there are close friendships between students, accommodation bookings and package costs are based on twin share rooms. Mixed gender twin share rooms are not practical for the remaining students who may not wish to share with a student of a different gender.Can my partner/friend accompany me while I am taking part in BP?
No, this is an intensive two week for-credit subject which requires you to be available to work with your team for the duration of the program. You can travel with your partner/friend prior to or after the completion of the program. -

Global Business Practicum - January 2021
BUSA90485 Global Business Practicum is an in-company intensive subject where students experience the unique business practices and culture of an international company first-hand.
The Global Business Practicum is worth 12.5 credit points and is offered in January, June and November of each year. Students participating in the January 2021 intake of the program will travel to Singapore.

Why take BUSA90485 Global Business Practicum
Studies show that having a well-developed range of transferrable skills is crucial for the success of individuals, businesses and societies. Often referred to as employability or ‘soft’ skills, these are the non-technical skills such as communication, teamwork, problem solving, critical thinking and self-management which are developed through exposure to experiences outside the classroom - like work integrated learning subjects, internships and on-the-job learning.
When these employability skills are combined with technical skills/qualifications and personal attributes, an individual becomes employable across a range of industries, increasing job prospects, becoming a more competitive job-seeker and being a more attractive potential hire.
So what does this have to do with the Global Business Practicum?
As well as being an impressive addition to any CV, the primary aim of the Global Business Practicum is to provide graduate students with opportunities to develop and enhance employability skills from application right through to the final assessment and beyond.
It is expected that 2/3 jobs will be soft skill intensive by 2030, so finding opportunities to develop these skills as early as possible is becoming increasingly important.
In the Global Business Practicums this is done by:
- Working closely in a team;
- Building resilience by being exposed to challenging and intensive working environments;
- Communicating with a range of stakeholders;
- Increasing global networks;
- Using critical thinking and problem-solving skills to solve a real business problem;
- Applying classroom theory to real world practice.

Eligibility Criteria
The below criteria should help you determine whether you would be a strong candidate for the Global Business Practicum:
You are enrolled into an MBS graduate degree
Faculty of Business and Economics (FBE) students who have already completed one Graduate Practicum subject may apply to take another but will be placed on a waiting list and only offered a place based on availability.
Non-FBE students are not eligible to apply for any FBE practicum subjects without the prior approval of the Subject Coordinator and the MBS Deputy Dean. Proof of approval must be emailed to mbs-practicums@unimelb.edu.au before the application close date. Late approval submissions will not be accepted and applications without the required approval will be withdrawn.
Your Weighted Average Mark (WAM) is 70% or higher
Due to limited spaces, entry into the Global Business Practicum is competitive. Selection is based on a University of Melbourne equivalent weighted average mark for all undergraduate and postgraduate subjects successfully completed at the selection date, as well as performance in an interview process, and is contingent on permission from the Subject Coordinator.
The minimum average mark requirement for the subject is 70% and the Selection Committee considers the following when allocating places:
- Academic Performance
- Interview performance
- An overall match of skills, experience and interests to the available projects
You have completed a minimum of 50 points
- 200-point degree students: completion of a minimum of 50 points at time of application; or
- 150 point degree students: completion of a minimum of 50 points at time of practicum commencement if you have a business background (e.g. studied business subjects in an undergraduate degree or relevant work experience).
Note: All students enrolled in a 200-point degree must first have completed 50 points before applying, regardless of educational background.
You are only applying for one Practicum subject (Global or Business Practicum) for the intake
Students must only apply for one Graduate Practicum per intake. Students who apply for both the Global Business Practicum and the Business Practicum during the same intake (e.g. January/Summer) will not be considered for either subject.
You have met with a Course Planner from STOP1 and checked that there is capacity within your study plan for this elective subject worth 12.5 points
Students are required to seek guidance from a STOP1 Course Planner prior to applying to ensure there is space in their study plan for this subject. Course Advice appointments can be booked here.
Please note: students undertaking the Master of Commerce (Finance) are generally ineligible to apply, due to limited elective options available in the course.
You have prepared your CV and had it reviewed
Students who successfully make it through the selection process (including attending a group interview) and receive an official offer for the Global Business Practicum must submit an up-to-date CV as part of the acceptance requirements.
CVs must be reviewed by the Careers and Employability Studio at Stop 1, or by an external professional CV writing service.

In addition to the standard University subject fee, there is an additional fee yet to be determined for the Global Business Practicum.

Global Business Practicum Travel Grant
All students who are given a place in the Global Business Practicum and successfully enrol in the subject will be eligible for the $1,000 Global Business Practicum Travel Grant to assist with costs.

WHAT EXPERIENCE DO I NEED TO APPLY?
Can I apply if I don’t have any consulting experience?
Yes, there is a full selection process including a group interview to determine your eligibility and suitability for the program. Selection is not based on existing consulting experience.CONCURRENT STUDY
I want to take an online intensive subject over the summer/winter break while also completing the GBP (e.g. Ethics in Finance). Is this okay?
No, even though the subject is online, students participating in the GBP will not be permitted to enrol in any other subjects that run during the same dates as the practicums. GBP is intensive and requires 100% commitment from students.CITIES, PROJECTS AND TEAMS
Can I choose the GBP city?
Students can nominate their order of preferences of GBP cities. Nominating only one city may reduce the likelihood of being selected into the program.
Can I change my city preference once I’ve been accepted?
No, preferences are not able to be negotiated once the offer has been accepted. We base substantial decision making and coordination of arrangements on the nominated preferences.
Can I choose my team, the company or type of project?
No, students are allocated to teams and companies with specific projects. However, students are given the opportunity to advise their areas of interest which we endeavour to consider when allocating teams. Students would not be allocated to a project where they did not have the technical skills required. Most projects are multi-disciplinary.IN COUNTRY ACCOMMODATION
I have family that live in the GBP city. Can I stay with them during the GBP or do I have to stay at the organised accommodation?
Students must stay at the organised accommodation due to the intensive nature of the subject and because a lot of the teamwork happens during the evening and late into the night.Can I pay an additional cost and have my own single room?
No, package costs have been worked out based on twin share rooms with accommodation secured up to six months in advance. Single rooms are not practical for the remaining students who may not wish to pay extra for a single room, nor can the availability of additional rooms be guaranteed.I have a friend of a different gender also participating in the GBP, can we request to share a room?
No, whilst we understand there are close friendships between students, accommodation bookings and package costs are based on twin share rooms. Mixed gender twin share rooms are not practical for the remaining students who may not wish to share with a student of a different gender.Can my partner/friend accompany me while I am taking part in GBP?

Internships
BUSA90525 Business and Economics Internship subject offers the opportunity to complete a placement in an area related to their studies, whilst earning credit towards their Master’s degree. It is also an opportunity for students to apply business knowledge in an industry setting with the support of an industry and academic mentor.
This internship subject is worth 12.5 credit points and can be completed in the following semesters: Summer, Winter, Semester 1 and Semester 2.
Due to the high demand for this subject, enrolments will be capped each semester.
Please note that the Business and Economics Internship subject is for UNPAID placements only.

What is not a suitable internship?
- Student's family business or where a member of their immediate family (parents, step-parents, spouse, partner, or siblings) will be the work placement supervisor.
- Organisations with fewer than 5 staff employed.
- Retail assistant roles.
- Hospitality front of house roles such as bar attendants and waiters.
- A workplace where students are currently employed, unless there is enough evidence that:
- the placement is substantially different to their current role;
- the placement will take place in a different department;
- the student will be supervised by a different supervisor; and
- the area of work is related to their studies
- Paid placements. This subject is for unpaid placements only.

There are numerous training resources available to University of Melbourne students, which offer tips from preparing job applications to preparing for the workplace.
Students should take advantage of these resources to learn new skills, including technical skills such as Microsoft Office, to developing soft skills which are highly sought after in the workplace. Step 3: Submit your application
- Please ensure all supporting documents have been completed to avoid delays with your assessment.

Step 4: Application assessment
Your eligibility will be assessed, and placement and host suitability will be checked.
There are 30 placements available per intake. If there are more than 30 applications submitted, assessment and approval will be based according to the order (date and time) that they are received.

- You will receive an outcome no later than 10 days after the closing date.
- Once you have received a successful outcome you will be given instructions on next steps and subject enrolment.

This unique and intensive learning experience will prepare me for life after graduation, and has made me feel confident about entering full-time work next year.
Christopher Chen is currently enrolled into the Master of Commerce (Actuarial Science). He was the Global Business Practicum Prize Winner in the November 2017 cohort. The Faculty of Business and Economics awards prizes to the best overall performing student in the application and interview process.
It was my first time in Europe, and everyone was speaking in an array of accents. Surrounded by men and women dressed in neat business attire, I stood looking at the idyllic view of Tower Bridge and the River Thames in the background. I had made it to EY London.
The Global Business Practicum sent 20 students to London, where we were split into teams of four to work on a project with a designated company. I was lucky enough to participate in a project for EY with three bright and talented individuals. Together, we worked on a thought leadership piece about Electric Vehicles. At the end of the two weeks, we became very knowledgeable about this technology which is virtually non-existent in Melbourne.
My key learning outcome from the two-week program was successfully developing my global business acumen. I was able to experience the differences between the world of work in London and in Melbourne, and worked with some inspiring individuals. Due to its size and centrality, the work in London was a lot busier, and the size of the projects were bigger. You could feel the rush every morning as people filled the Tube to get to work.
The Global Business Practicum creates a unique learning environment that does not exist in the common university subject. It was unique due to the project-based nature of the work, and because there was university academic support over the two-week period in-company. I had the opportunity to build my skills and experiences in a completely new environment, such as presenting my findings to a panel of partners and participating in daily meetings with members of EY. I sharpened my communication skills by learning to be concise and clear when communicating key message and presenting findings. This unique and intensive learning experience will prepare me for life after graduation, and has made me feel confident about entering full-time work next year.
For the lucky individuals who get to participate in future Business Practicums, my advice would be to enter the program with a ‘yes first’ mentality, be open to new experiences and willing to step out of your comfort zone. The practicum throws you into a bustling workplace, and allows students to take advantage of new opportunities. My experience and networks built in London will be invaluable to my career, and I am therefore very thankful for this opportunity.

The Global Business Practicum provides the opportunity to challenge yourself, and grow personally and professionally
Bart is in his third semester of the Master of Management (Marketing). Last November, he travelled to the UK to complete the Global Business Practicum. Along with three other students, Bart was assigned to the independently owned, Marketing and Brand agency, Cherry London.
The Global Business Practicum program was a great success and a fantastic learning experience. The experience of being an international consultant from start to finish has been personally and professionally enriching. Since day one, I was extremely motivated and in my element working overseas, as I have worked in Italy, France and in Australia. I always wanted to work in London, so to do so on my first trip to the UK was a dream come true.
I was excited when I entered the Cherry London office on the first day. The company had a stimulating environment, a marketing agency with creative minds. We were introduced to the company staff as external consultants from the University of Melbourne.
Our first day comprised of a briefing session with the Chief Strategy Officer and the senior staff. We were given a briefing about our project along with the company’s background. The aim of this session was to discuss how our team would meet project objectives and deliver results. This was my first lesson as a consultant; having a good understanding of the project brief is key in any consulting project.
Cherry London believed in the power of collaboration and their mantra was ‘Together We Are Extraordinary’. Our project related to these values, and demonstrating that brands are more effective in generating better outcomes through collaboration. Coincidentally, my team demonstrated this mantra too. We were culturally diverse; from Australia, China, Colombia, and Italy. Each team member had different academic and professional backgrounds. Whenever a challenge arose, we tackled it with constructive discussions and creatively thinking outside of the box.
I was extremely motivated during the project; The skills I gained in class were being applied to a real-life business. Also, knowing that Cherry London was going to take our findings seriously kept kept the team focused. We learned to communicate effectively, which is essential in the business world.
The final day in-company was extremely rewarding. My team presented our findings to the senior managers of Cherry London. The presentation was unlike any classroom presentation. The Chief Strategy Officer was on a conference call; we were interrupted with questions and requests for further details. I enjoyed this style of presentation which felt more like a 40-minute open discussion. My team attempted to be creative in capturing our audience. Eventually, I felt positive about the work we had done as our client seemed delighted.
The Global Business Practicum provides the opportunity to challenge yourself, and grow personally and professionally. The experience exposed me to both my strengths and weaknesses. Following this, I will continue to develop my communication, leadership and teamwork skills. I believe these are the skills every manager should master. I feel reassured and more equipped for my career in marketing.

Choosing between Business Practicums by Jeremy Smith
Having completed both the MBP and GBP has left me feeling confident about the immediate value that I can bring to future employers.
Jeremy Smith completed a Bachelor of Science and is expected to complete the Master of Management (Finance) in 2018. He was the Melbourne Business Practicum (MBP) Prize Winner for July 2017 and completed the Global Business Practicum (GBP) to London in November 2017. FBE awards prizes to the best overall performing student in the application and interview process.
Arriving home from my European travels capped off the most challenging but rewarding year of my time at The University of Melbourne. Forgoing post-exam breaks to complete both the MBP in July, and the GBP in November, I felt a tad exhausted. Nevertheless, the experiences and connections made from each program have been invaluable.
Reasons for the MBP and experience
I hadn’t expected to undertake both programs. When choosing between Business Practicum subjects earlier in the year, I chose the MBP over the GBP. I viewed the outcomes of each subject comparatively but was drawn to the MBP as I would have the opportunity to expand my local network, without the additional planning and costs associated with travel.
My experience with the MBP was overwhelmingly positive. As a team of four we were tasked with testing the feasibility of an online investment advice service that our client, Heuristic Investment Systems, sought to develop. This led us to complete desktop market research, compile a prototype of the software, and even interview the Chief Investment Officer of a superannuation fund. I was challenged to apply my academic learnings whilst taking a pragmatic view on the task, driving us to constantly think of how our work could aid the client’s business. It was immensely satisfying to receive genuine praise and interest in our ideas following our final presentation, and to hear of our host company’s plan to move forward with the work from our findings.
Reasons for the GBP and experience
I reconsidered applying for the GBP in London for a few reasons. Firstly, I had realised that no two projects would be the same, and that the skills I had taken out of the MBP would only develop through experience. Secondly, the opportunity to work in a cultural and financial hub such as London would expose me to different work cultures, as well as working at a company with an international presence. Lastly, I could take a well-earned European holiday at the completion of the subject.
The lead up to London required more planning and expenses. When selecting flights, I decided to arrive on the Saturday before starting at the company on Monday. In hindsight, there wasn’t much time to get over the jetlag that 24 hours of travel induces – so I would recommend arriving about four days earlier to adjust. Whilst students selected their flights, accommodation in Greenwich had been organised. It was about a half hour train ride from where the central London host companies were located.
London moved at a faster pace than Melbourne, both inside and outside the office. The client was an international construction company, ISG. My team were required to research potential growth industries in which they could win work in in the next 5-10 years. Following this, we developed strategies that could best position them for this. We held meetings with a variety of people across the business to garner understanding of their capabilities, completed research using in-house materials and university databases, and drew on a variety of academic learnings from our respective degrees.
In comparison to the MBP, we were required to take an international perspective, whilst also quickly developing an understanding of the local market. Similarly, to the MBP, our hard work was rewarded with a successful conclusion to our time, with our presentation to senior staff being well received. Our fresh perspective and blue-sky thinking allowed us to elicit future opportunities for ISG, of which multiple are being progressed with by the business.
Outcomes
Having completed both the MBP and GBP has left me feeling confident about the immediate value that I can bring to future employers, as well as a better idea about what I want to do with my career. I would strongly recommend students looking to develop their employability to undertake either program.

B.Com graduate Serafina Fong is completing the Master of Finance. She was the Melbourne Business Practicum (MBP) prize winner in February 2018. Along with three other students, she was assigned to work at ShineWing Australia.
Why did you apply for the Melbourne Business Practicum?
I will be looking to enter the workforce soon. I knew that having the opportunity to gain valuable work experience would provide me a pathway to understanding the workings and complexities of real business problems, and enrich my studies at Melbourne Business School.
My team
Group assignments can sometimes be iffy, especially when you can’t choose your teammates. In this case, however, the four of us in the ShineWing team worked perfectly together and became great friends. This was the best group-work experience I have had at university. My team members were highly driven and capable – it was great being able to work with like-minded peers who were all motivated to make the most out of the experience. We were serious and productive when it came to work, and had fun after clocking off and during the weekends. We still keep in touch and get together even now!

Final presentation to the host company
The days leading up to the final presentation were slightly nerve-racking as we were presenting to senior management and ShineWing partners. Because my team was organised and worked efficiently, we were well-prepared. Our client was pleased with the work that we presented and the attendees asked many interesting questions, which showed their engagement. After the presentation, we were provided with thoughtful feedback to help us improve our final report.

I am especially grateful for the dedication that Matthew Schofield (Partner and main contact at ShineWing) had towards our program. He shared his experiences and allowed us to talk through our ideas. This helped us form a report which combined our research with his specialist knowledge. Our supervisor Sharon Soltys, was experienced and guided my team. She provided us with helpful feedback and kept the team on track, so we stuck to the project scope and worked well with our client.
Advice for students
Doing the MBP has made my summer well-spent! The entire experience was so wonderful – working with a fantastic team and supportive mentors made the subject an unforgettable experience. I strongly recommend the subject to fellow students!

Where are they now? Alumni Profile: Derek Lam
Derek Lam completed a Bachelor of Commerce (Marketing, Management and Finance) in 2013 and a Master of Commerce (Marketing) in 2014. He describes the Melbourne Business Practicum and Global Business Practicum as the most valuable experiences of his time at Melbourne Business School. Derek also actively participated in global opportunities in his undergraduate degree and completed a semester of study in the UK at the University of Manchester.
Describe your journey and activities you were involved in
I spent my childhood in Macao, SAR; a small city famous for having a strong Cantonese and Portuguese culture and of course, a city full of casinos too. After completing high school, I spent a year at Trinity College before commencing in the Bachelor of Commerce. During this time, I was active in theatre production and marketing for a Chinese theatre group and dabbled in photography.
I continued my studies in the Master of Commerce (Marketing), where I completed the Global Business Practicum. My team were sent to Malaysia and were allocated to work for Grant Thornton Consulting. Aside from this, I tutored in the third-year ‘Retail Management’ subject and was a Melbourne Business School Graduate Ambassador and peer-mentor.
Where do you work?I am based on Shanghai, working in consulting for Altran; the business consulting arm of a global Engineering Research & Development company. Life is good in Shanghai and I’ve been enjoying living here since 2016. Prior to this, I worked for the market research and consulting company, Ipsos, based in Hong Kong, then in Shanghai.
Tell us about your time on the Melbourne Business Practicum (MBP)
I was one of four students assigned to ‘The Huddle’ based at North Melbourne Football Club. The Huddle promotes multiculturalism and encourages social cohesion in an ethnically diverse community. Funding is needed to run the programs that thousands of young people aged between nine and 25 participate in, each year. Our project was to develop a sponsorship proposal to ensure long-term financial sustainability.
Has the MBP influence your career path?
Yes. I developed skills in project management and critical thinking, along with how to manage clients; the importance of understanding and listening to client needs. My intention was for recommendations to go beyond impressing the client, my team wanted to leave a lasting impact in the organisation.
Memorable moments from the MBP
Before the team’s final presentation; everyone felt nervous but we were passionate about our findings. We spent a significant amount of time rehearsing for our presentation which paid off when standing in front of the General Manager. We wanted to go beyond delivering our findings and offered to hold further discussions with our ideas. The ‘follow-up discussion’ approach worked well and we had a great session. We may not have done everything perfectly, but we connected with our client and made a positive difference.
My team was also featured in an article about the MBP in the University’s ‘Voice’ newspaper!
MBP for students
I would recommend that MBS students apply for the MBP. The subject isn’t just aimed at students wanting to be consultants; this is a project experience which will help to guide and reflect on career aspirations. Students can put their educational skills and knowledge into action - it’s hands-on, it’s inspiring!
The Alumni community in Shanghai is strong. We celebrated our 10-year anniversary in November 2017. The Business and Economics Dean, Professor Paul Kofman attended this event with several other professors. I was lucky to reunite with Professor Bill Harley, who taught me in the Master of Commerce. Great events like this are often organised so the Alumni community is closely connected.

Where are they now? Alumni Profile: Jason Lai
Jason Lai completed a Bachelor of Arts in 2014 and was recognised on the Dean’s Honours List for outstanding results. He continued his studies in the Master of Management (Finance) at Melbourne Business School. As part of his degree, he completed the Melbourne Business Practicum (MBP) in 2016, working at the global firm Genpact. Since graduating last year, Jason was awarded a Victorian Government Hamer Scholarship to study Chinese in China, which he undertook at Suzhou University.
When I was interviewed for an internship at ANZ in 2016, the MBP was the first thing I was asked about… the experience really helped me stand out from other applicants.
Where are you currently working?
I currently work at ANZ Bank’s Graduate Program in Small Business Banking.
What was your experience of completing the Melbourne Business Practicum (MBP) and what did you take away from this?
The MBP was the most challenging subject I undertook at the university. The key challenges were the short amount of time my team had to complete our project, and the process of understanding the complexities of our research topic.
There were so many things I gained from the subject. It helped me develop my capacity to put myself in my client’s shoes, think critically about what they want, and identify their best interests. The project’s topic helped me gain insight into market risk regulation within banking. It was also a privilege to work with and learn from my amazing academic supervisor Sujay Nair, and my wonderful teammates Qi Pan, Yiying Zhu and Runtao Ma.
What 3 attributes should students strive to attain, to be successful on the MBP?
Teamwork is very important - it is not a task that can be completed alone. If there are issues in this regard, they should be raised and addressed as a priority. Time management is also critical due to the tight deadlines. It is important to be realistic about outcomes and to prioritise tasks. Lastly, report writing skills are essential. At the end of the day, the report is the final product for the client. It is important that the content is relevant to their needs, and that findings and recommendations are expressed clearly.
Have you referenced your experiences in the MBP when applying for jobs?
I referenced the MBP on my Linkedin profile as a ‘project’, and made sure to link my teammates’ profiles to this project. In describing the experience, I explained the research topic, my personal achievements in the project, as well as my learning experiences.
Did completing the MBP have an impact your career prospects?
When I was interviewed for an internship at ANZ in 2016, the MBP was the first thing I was asked about. I think the experience really helped me stand out from other applicants. Following my internship, I landed my current role in the ANZ Graduate Program.
